Spielberg successfully captures the grim and gritty feel of Dick’s novel, and creates additional dark characters of which Dick would be proud. He builds upon Dick’s favourite emotions of confusion, paranoia and thrill. He encapsulates Dick’s vision of the future. However, the message of Minorit y Report becomes diluted in the transition from page to screen. It is a financially and visually successful adaptation, but lacking in parity with Dick’s original intent.One of the biggest reasons for the differences in Spielberg’s adaptation is the different audiences for which the two works were created. A common feature of many works of science fiction is their non-conformist and non-mainstream qualities, which many of Dick’s works share. In converting this short story into a Hollywood blockbuster, Spielberg necessarily changed several aspects in order to make the story ‘sellable’. One of these aspects is Minority Report’s characters. Ignoring Dick’s description of his middle-aged hero as â€Å"Bald and fat and old†, Anderton becomes the explosive young Tom Cruise. Rather than â€Å"smiling with forced amiability† at Witwer while â€Å"Fear touched him and he began to sweat†, Spielberg’s Anderton exchange s retorts with Witwer, such as â€Å"Why dont you cut the cute act, Danny boy†, culminating in a crowd-pleasing fight scene at a Lexus car factory. Likewise, Witwer is transformed from a blond, blue-eyed and stalwart believer in Precrime to a more intriguing, dark-haired ex-seminary student and wily Irish skeptic. Rather than reciting humble lines like â€Å"Maybe I – don’t have this job down as neatly as I imagined†, Spielberg has his Witwer confronting Anderton about his drug addiction, exhibiting â€Å"image scrubbing† skills that rival Anderton’s, and almost deducing Burgess’ murderous secrets. These more virile and fiery action heroes, replacing Dick’s middle aged main characters, change the dynamics of the story. Similarly, the â€Å"deformed and retarded† Donna becomes the intelligent, sympathetic and attractive Agatha. Rather than being â€Å"imprisoned in†¦ special high-backed chairs† and â€Å"babb ling† incoherently, Agatha reveals the murder of her mother to Anderton, and uses her psychic skills to help him evade capture. She also persuades him to not voluntarily shoot Leo Crowe despite this being his predetermined fate. This emphasis upon the individual character’s gifts and skills, and their ability to choose their own fate, obscures the deeper implications of the Precrime system. In the novel, Dick’s emphasis was upon an older man beset by a fate he could not change, despite his efforts. He was intending to warn of the dangers of the future, and the susceptibility of mankind to its destiny. The reason for these changes was to make Minority Report more ‘sellable’. However, it could be argued that in this process Spielberg ‘sold out’ the true message of Dick’s work. Spielberg’s emphasis upon free will and the ability to alter one’s destiny shifts the film’s focus away from Dick’s underlying the mes, making the film less truthful to its inspiration, and therefore less successful as an adaptation.Another significant change made to Minority Report is its plot. In Dick’s original story, there had recently been waged an â€Å"Anglo-Chinese War†, which left its mark on the American country side. In contrast to Spielberg’s adaptation, the main antagonist of the story is Leopold Kaplan, a retired Army general who was plotting to once again take over full control of the government. In Anderton’s words: â€Å"After the war†¦ Officers like Kaplan were retired and discarded. Nobody likes that.† Attached to this plot is Dick’s apprehension at the excessive control of government, and the future dangers associated with a powerful government melded with modern technology. By replacing Kaplan with Burgess, Spielberg reduces the theme of Minority Report from social and political conflict to interpersonal conflict. No longer is the antagonist mo tivated by power and the desire to control society; Burgess is simply motivated by personal greed and ambition. By making the antagonist a greedy and ruthless individual, rather than the power-hungry International Veterans’ League, Spielberg downplays Dick’s political themes. Also, Spielberg introduces the loss of his son as Anderton’s motivation for joining Precrime and his determination to prevent murder. This emphasis upon Anderton’s personal pain dwarfs the broader social perspective Dick originally intended. Another plot change was Spielberg’s restriction of Precrime to the prediction of murder. As Fletcher explains, Theres nothing more destructive to the metaphysical fabric that binds us than the untimely murder of one human being by another. When describing the predictions of the precogs, Anderton said: â€Å"most†¦ record petty crimes†. By focusing solely upon murder, Spielberg lessened Dick’s portrayal of an engineered s ociety totally under the control of the government. Since murder was the only crime foreseen, then police interference in society was seen as less invasive than in Dick’s short story, and therefore less concerning. All these alterations resulted in greater focus upon the individual characters and their battles against fate, leaving hardly any mention of the greater political and social concerns evident in Dick’s work. Spielberg neglected Dick’s forewarning of future government tyranny in favour of a story mainly concerned with individual free choice.Another of the significant differences between Dick and Spielberg is their endings. Spielberg has his Anderton end the film with the optimistic monologue: â€Å"In 2054, the six-year Precrime experiment was abandoned. All prisoners were unconditionally pardoned and released†¦ Agatha and the twins†¦ live out their lives in peace.† This is in stark contrast to Anderton’s closing words in the boo k: â€Å"Better keep your eyes open†¦ It might happen to you at any time.† Spielberg’s characteristic happy ending, evident in most of his films, negates Dick’s original tone of warning. Rather than containing an undertone of urgency, foreboding or cynicism, Spielberg more often meanders into humour and light-heartedness. This is exemplified when Anderton launches through a family’s dinner table during the jetpack chase scene, and in Rufus Riley’s line to Agatha: â€Å"Those thoughts about my cousin Elena, those were just thoughts!† This humour is not evident at all evident in Dick’s original work, just as Spielberg’s hopeful spin is incompatible with Dick’s original intent. Spielberg ends his film with Anderton escaping his fate, and Burgess proving the system as flawed. As Anderton says to Burgess: â€Å"You still have a choice, Lamar†. This choice of fate is not evident in Dick’s work. Neither does Anderton bring down the system, despite proving its flaws. The precogs continue to be â€Å"imprisoned in their special high-backed chairs†, and society continues to be controlled through technology. This ending serves as a warning against modern society being overrun with technology, and engineered to dangerous perfection. Spielberg’s alterations distort Dick’s message, and result in a humanistic triumph rather than a solemn caution.Despite these gaping differences in theme and message, the look and feel of Minority Report is strikingly accurate to Dick’s original story. True to the original, Spielberg’s film is dark, melancholy, and replete with paranoia and sombre colour schemes. In both original and adaptation, there are shadowy and mysterious characters like Fleming and the eyeless drug dealer. Spielberg even builds upon Dick’s style by introducing characters like the weird eye surgeon, his strange nurse, and the piano-playing prison gu ard, Gideon. In both original and adaptation, there are dark and forbidding settings like the â€Å"dark streets of New York† and the ominous underworld of ‘The Sprawl’. The fast-paced and action-laced scenes shot by Spielberg reflect, amongst others, the frenetic car crash scene of Chapter IV. Also, Anderton’s drug-obsession is reflective of Dick’s other works, and his constant questioning and confusion fits perfectly with Dick’s favourite question of â€Å"What is real?†. Spielberg’s grungy and gloomy scenes, such as the jetpack chase through The Sprawl, are suggestive of such descriptions in the book as â€Å"the rubbish-littered streets† and â€Å"the tumbled miles of cheap hotels and broken-down tenements that had sprung up after the mass destruction of the war.† Spielberg also builds upon Dick’s ambiguous technology, translating â€Å"data-receptors†, â€Å"computing mechanisms† and †Å"bundles of wiring† into motion-operated computers, magnetically levitated public transport and iris-scanning equipment – all in a way that channels Dick’s creativity. Just like the original, the mood of Spielberg’s adaptation is mostly sombre, focused upon fear, suspicion and thoughts of confusion – emotions which Spielberg interprets in his colour scheme. The lighting of Minority Report is desaturated and highly contrasted, reflecting the shadowy and war-ravaged world of Dick’s original story. While Spielberg removes the effects of war, he leaves a sense of subduedness, reflected in muted colours and grim contrasts. All these production elements bring Spielberg’s version closer to the creative essence of Dick’s work. However, they fail to bridge the gap between Dick’s concerns and Spielberg’s altered message.Dick’s short story was a poignant herald of the future, and its possible dangers. He created an en tertaining story which avoided a happy ending in favour of a timely social message. His vision of police control, lack of free will and the possibility of tyranny is pertinent in today’s increasingly globalised and government-centred society. Spielberg’s adaptation loses this vital message in the transformation from book to screen. The individual actions of its characters become more important than the deeper social implications. The significant plot and character differences between the two versions stem from their being aimed at two contrasting audiences. Spielberg’s version was a thrilling action movie that engaged the audience in a story of escape, intrigue, murder-mystery and ultimate triumph of the underdog, aided by the stunning distraction of special effects and enigmatic colours. Dick’s original story was focused more upon deeper questions of social engineering, the hazard of perfection and the dangers of over-powerful government. It was a grim a nd satirical warning of what the future might hold. Spielberg was successful in capturing the gritty and gloomy feel of Minority Report, but Dick’s important underlying message was lost in translation. Rather than warn, Spielberg’s version was designed to engage and entertain. In this respect, the modern adaptation of Minority Report failed.

For example, one Tutsi, in the movie, tell a story how their noses were measured to make sure that it met the Hutu qualifications. As a result, Tutsi women and children were raped and along with the men murdered. The Tutsi people were at times ordered to kill their own relatives, if they were not able to bribe the Hutu soldiers. The Tutsi neighborhoods were targeted; homes of the Tutsis were burglarized, destroyed, and burned. In the process, Hutus killed nearly 1 million Tutsis in less than one hundred days. Such acts violate the freedoms and right of individuals described in the articles of the UDHR. But especially the Rwanda Genocide was in breach of articl e thirty in the UDHR. Oval Office President Clinton contacted Dick Morris, an associate of seventeen years, one month before the 1994 gubernatorial elections with one goal in mind, to win the 1996 presidential election. His intentions were to get Morris's help to win back the presidency and redefine his image as the Commander in Chief. With the notion of the permanent campaign, Clinton was able to gain back public appeal and win the 1996 election with ease. Recent history has shown that presidents can not only be brought down by their failures but by their successes as well. Although they may accomplish what they say they are going to, failures to initiate new programs and innovate cause voters to lose interest. This was where Dick Morris and the permanent campaign stepped in. Clinton employed Morris to figure out which way the public was going on issues and what they really wanted out of their president. What the majority of people wanted was change. The public wanted a president who acted like a president. The use of extensive polling helped Morris and Clinton determine the popular stances on issues, which arguments were more persuasive, and why certain voters liked or disliked the President. Clinton needed to get a clear idea of how he had gone wrong in the eyes of his public in order to get back on track with them. Polling was not used to tell the President what to do, but was a good gauge as to what the public felt was important for him to do and where they stood as a society. Clinton's easy win in 1996 was a result of his new definition of the job and the new substance that was added to his campaign. It was not the result of"spinning." Spinning refers to when consultants or "spin doctors" change the way in which their candidates and their positions on issues are presented. Substance is not created. Their views are merely twisted to change the public's perception of them. What Dick Morris did with Bill Clinton was not spinning. Morris used already set positions that had not been publicized and put them out in the open. He used the Presidents basic themes and found new issues that would accentuate his views on them. He never intended to change the President's mind or "flip flop" on anything but instead brought to attention the Presidents already taken positions that would be popular among voters. This added new substance to Clinton's campaign. At first, instead of following through with the things that won him the election in 1992, Clinton sought to please his Congressional Democrats and gain party support. Morris felt that if they continued to worry about pleasing congressional Democrats, they would get nowhere. Clinton did not wish completely abandon his Democratic Party. He only wished to change it. Another factor leading to President Clinton's success was Triangulation. The President succeeded in creating a third person that accommodated the needs of both parties yet was unique to him. He attempted to pull both sides more towards the center discovering a common ground in which both parties' views could be molded into one moderate consensus. One major example of Triangulation was Clinton's tax-cut. Morris explained that the Republicans wanted tax cuts for the rich, and the Democrats did not want tax cuts of any kind. To create a third argument Clinton proposed a broad-based tax cut based on functional differences instead of economic class. This was greatly approved by the public who was becoming much more concerned with society as a whole rather than the individual. Another example was Clinton's "Pile of Vetoes Speech," where he reached out to congressional Republicans to move more towards the middle. Dick Morris urged the President to take moderate positions overall but to take strong and opposing positions on the worst of the right wing issues like abortion, gun control, and militia. The public was tired of Republican extremism, and wanted to move forward. Dick Morris said, "In politics, power and information are everything." There was a great lack of communication between the two parties. This ended when Clinton, Morris, and Republican Trent Lott formed an alliance that would prove vital in the years to come. Lott was a conservative but not extreme right wing. Clinton trusted him. He was a man that honestly believed in doing what was best for the country. Another point of the real problems that Franklin had with people and relationships is the entire relationship that he had with Miss Read.The only thing that he wanted from the marriage was some money from the parents. Franklin was give it to him he first suggested to mortgage the house, and when he knew that that wouldnt be done he basically left them and Miss Read. Jonathan Edwards looks on life as a chance to serve God. He serves God by working hard and not doing things that would be considered bad by a Puritan (IEEE. UN, drinking, dancing, and parties. ) He believes Just like other Puritans that life should be dedicated strictly to God.The main idea to understand from Puritans is that when they believe that they are beginning to understand the Bible, they are beginning to understand the Word of God. Understanding the word of God means to Puritans that God is dwelling within them, which then, in turn, means that they are one of the chosen few who are saved. In order to ensure that he is one of the few to be saved Edwards must demean others so that they get the idea that they arent saved and only Edwards is saved. The only thing that Edwards values early in his life is salvation. He must have salvation. He believes he has been saved too and he goes on to point this out: From the about that time I began to have a new kind of apprehensions and Ideas of Christ, and the works of redemption, and the glorious way of salvation Him. I had an inward, sweet sense of these things, that at timescale into my heart; and my souls led away in pleasant views and contemplations of them. Transitional period he learned about life and the dwelling of God in nature, in all things.He took notice to nature which eventually led, though prayer and meditation, to the newer Edwards who attempted to help people. His attitude toward them still remained basically the same but as one of the chosen he tried to save more people and to spread the word of God. The attempts to save people are most notably seen through the sermons that he gives, his most famous being the one entitled Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God Edwards later in his life changed a bit and he thought that he understood God and his will.What really changed is that he seemed to care, maybe even if it was Just a little, about his fellow man. Although he still went out and preached to people, gave his sermons and basically told people that they were worth very little and didnt really care about them, he was out there in the public trying to save them and to tell them that even though God can and should let us burn in hell he doesnt let us all go to hell, he does pick out a few who have been exceptionally well. Those few whom He has chosen are saved.The Edwards whole point in the sermons is to scare other people people and get them to mend their ways in some possible feeble attempt to achieve salvation. Anne Broadsheet while to perfect in her own right is the probably the most alike me. She values most the relationships in her life, but she has trouble with her relationships because of the writes: Thou speakeasys fair, but hats me sore, Thy flattering shows Ill trust MO more, How oft thy slave, hast thou me made, When I believed what thou hast said, And never had more cause of woe, Than when I did what thou bats do,(p. 28 ) It refers to the difficulties between the flesh and the spirit of her body. It said that the flesh had spoken highly of the spirit but her actions spoke much louder, and it was quite the opposite. Broadsheet values her relationships more but is confused because of her devotion to God. Her God who had given her everything can at any time take it away, and Broadsheet realizes this but cant help but be saddened. She looses a house and she can handle it because as she so eloquently put it Yet by His gift is made thin own; Theres wealth enough I need no more, Farewell, my pelf, farewell my store. (p. 33) She knows that all the things that she really needs are in heaven and that cant be taken away from her. The world no longer let me love, My hope and treasure lies above. (p. 134) Somewhat of a problem with Broadsheet is ere attachment with some of her acquaintances. She is really attached to her granddaughter for example. Breadbaskets relationships mean very much to her, and in the poem about the death of her granddaughter, Broadsheet shows her weakness with people and relationships Blest babe, why should I once bewail thy fate, or sigh thy days so soon were terminate, Sits thou art settled in an everlasting state. (p. 132). Yet regardless of what society thinks of Broadsheet or the relationships she still cherishes them with all her heart. I feel that Anne Broadsheet is most like me because I am all for the relationships in life. The relationships that I make and have are what make me. I dont treat people like objects and use them to get ahead in life. Nor do I Just hate people and think that everyone else is a corrupt individual out to make themselves look good in from of God.I am confused with my spiritual self Just like she is. And Just like broadsheet with the loss of her grandchild she was terribly sad, so am I with the move to college and my slowing communication with my old best group of friends. The relationships that people have with others has a severe impact on that persons life, albeit many are good, some, though, are bad. How we choose to form, maintain and use these relationships is up to us, Just as what they mean is up to us too. I will show the relationships of some writers and how they treat others, as an important value to me. Three writers of our era, Benjamin Franklin, Jonathan Edwards, and Anne Broadsheet are most notable with their relationships with people. My thoughts on Benjamin Franklins work were unfortunately Beginning with the Figure I have since made there.
